Geospatial Applications of Cave Resource Data to Better Understand Epikarst and Unsaturated Zone Groundwater Flow Path Development

چکیده

The unsaturated zone is a critical component of karstic groundwater systems and shown to provide substantial storage capacities. Understanding the spatial patterns controls on flow path activation often challenge. Previous research focused remotely sensed data or inferential analyses quantify these patterns. Here, we use two cave systems—one in Arizona, USA second Kentucky, USA—to show value survey inventory direct observation speleogenesis processes. Using geospatial statistical analyses, that passage size varies with distance from some faults, indicating faults play major role transporting fluid into limestone creating increased permeability form passages. Additionally, close relationship between water, calcite resources geology clear evidence for paths through systems. While both represent large area greatly permeability, only isolated sections caves this active flow. In cases, modern vadose occurs proximal contacts overlying insoluble lithology. These results suggest an expanded may greater insight

Unsaturated zone arsenic distribution and implications for groundwater contamination.

Arsenic compounds have been applied at the land surface as pesticides in agricultural areas globally. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the fate of anthropogenic arsenic applications related to agriculture, using arsenic applications on cotton in the southern High Plains (SHP), Texas, as a case study and examining possible linkages with contamination of the underlying Ogallala aquifer i...

Groundwater recharge simulation using a coupled saturated-unsaturated flow model

Abstract The coupled MODFLOW-HYDRUS software package was used to produce a saturated-unsaturated flow model for a Flood Spreading System (FSS) and its associated aquifer. The study aim to improve simulations of near-surface hydrological processes, including temporal and spatial variation in groundwater recharge rates. The coupled model was built with average RMSE=1.1 and 1.3 for calibration ...

Assessing controls on diffuse groundwater recharge using unsaturated flow modeling

[1] Understanding climate, vegetation, and soil controls on recharge is essential for estimating potential impacts of climate variability and land use/land cover change on recharge. Recharge controls were evaluated by simulating drainage in 5-m-thick profiles using a one-dimensional (1-D) unsaturated flow code (UNSAT-H), climate data, and vegetation and soil coverages from online sources. Soil ...

Impacts of Unsaturated Zone Soil Moisture and Groundwater Table on Slope Instability

The combined effect of soil moisture in unsaturated soil layers and pore-water pressure in saturated soil layers is critical to predict landslides. An improved infinite slope stability model, that directly includes unsaturated zone soil moisture and groundwater, is derived and used to analyze the factor of safety’s sensitivity to unsaturated zone soil moisture. This sensitivity, the change in t...
